Biography

Anatoly Shabalin K. was born in 1995 in Izhevsk, Russia. Studied at Fine Art school in his hometown. School had a focus on applied arts with strong Soviet era influence. It involved producing tapestries, batik, ceramic and academic drawings. Later moved to London, UK and studied illustration at Central Saint Martins. Currently resides in Berlin, Germany.

Departure from his own country and frequent relocation sparked reflection on the concepts of self-identity and the significance of home. Lost connection with native culture, fear of new space reflects in the artworks. Often portrays lonely characters trapped in empty rooms. They were born in a hostile world and learnt how to grow spikes as a means of self-defence. Structures of the pieces are also playing significant role in a storytelling. They either engineered in such a way that is easy to disassemble in order to easily continue the journey, or they have protective corners as a protection for further transportation.
